Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a train connecting Sahibabad and Duhai Depo stations in Uttar Pradesh, marking the beginning of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) in India. This is India’s first semi-high-speed regional rail service, known as Namo Bharat.

October 20, 2023, is now a historic day for India’s transportation system. As soon as Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), a new era began in public transportation.

On October 20, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the priority section of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor in Uttar Pradesh, starting at Sahibabad Rapidex Station. With this, India introduced the Regional Rapid Transit System, known as RRTS. On this occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the Namo Bharat Rapidex Train, which connects Sahibabad to Duhai Depot.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) stated that Namo Bharat is a transformative regional development initiative designed to provide high-speed train services for intercity travel. PM Modi even traveled on the train and had conversations with some school children. He mentioned that in the first phase of RRTS, Namo Bharat trains will connect various parts of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan.

He also mentioned that the entire 82-kilometer stretch between Delhi and Meerut will be completed in the next 1-1.5 years. The name of the rail service was changed from Rapidex to Namo Bharat.

The 17-kilometer-long priority section of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor will open for passengers one day after the inauguration.

In the priority section between Sahibabad and Duhai Depot, there are five stations: Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Guldhar, Duhai, and Duhai Depot.

RRTS trains prioritize passenger comfort with overhead storage, Wi-Fi, and charging options at each seat. Additionally, there will be a premium category car with spacious seating, ample legroom, and coat hangers, as stated in a press release.

Namo Bharat

The train’s security features include CCTV cameras, an emergency door opening mechanism, and a button to communicate with the train operator.

PMO stated that the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor is being developed at a cost of over 30,000 crores and will connect Delhi to Meerut in less than an hour through the urban centers of Ghaziabad, Muradnagar, and Modinagar.

The trains associated with the Regional Rapid Transit System have been named ‘Namo Bharat.’ Prime Minister Narendra Modi also took a ride on the first RRTS train. This was a moment of pride for all Indians because it marks the beginning of a new era in regional connectivity. Connecting two cities will play an essential role in transforming the way people travel regionally. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor four years ago, on March 8, 2019.

Work for the Meerut section of this corridor will be completed in the next one and a half years. What’s even more delightful is that the first Namo Bharat train has an all-female support staff and locomotive pilots, which is a significant step towards increasing women’s participation in the country’s transportation system.

The Regional Rapid Transit System is expected to bring a significant change in the country’s public transportation system. With the extensive network of Namo Bharat trains, traveling from one city to another within states will become much easier. People will be able to reach different regions within states in less time, making it easier for them to commute for jobs or businesses. This is a substantial transformation in the field of transportation.

I used to have a complaint that the transportation system in smaller towns was still quite outdated and not meeting the current needs. With the introduction of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), we can expect a significant change.

In total, the RRTS is going to help boost economic activities in the country. Trains like Namo Bharat will not only make the lives of passengers more convenient but also contribute to the development of high-quality basic infrastructure. This will open up new opportunities for the youth, entrepreneurs, and working women.

The Regional Rapid Transit System is a symbol of modernity and speed. One of the most significant benefits we can expect in the future is the reduction of traffic congestion on the roads after the extensive Namo Bharat network is established. This will also help increase the efficiency of goods transportation on national highways and within states. Moreover, it will have a positive impact on reducing air pollution due to fewer vehicles on the road.

Citizen welfare is a top priority. India is emerging as one of the world’s fastest-growing economies. Currently, we are the fifth-largest economy globally, and in the next few years, we are on track to become the third-largest. Furthermore, India aims to become a developed nation by 2047. To achieve this, efficient transportation is crucial. The Regional Rapid Transit System and the Namo Bharat trains will play a significant role. Ensuring the development of fundamental infrastructure is of utmost importance, especially at the local level.

The work on multi-modal connectivity is in progress under the RRTS. In the first phase, the Namo Bharat train will connect various regions in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan. Gradually, the Regional Rapid Transit System will introduce rapid rail services in other parts of the country. This will improve local connectivity and open up new employment opportunities.

It’s fair to say that this is a decade of transformation for Indian Railways. The introduction of the Rapid Rail service signifies a major shift in the way we see Indian Railways. If this transformation continues, by the end of this decade, Indian trains will no longer lag behind other countries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured that the 100% electrification goal for Indian Railways is within reach.

The Central Government has been working swiftly on modernizing railway stations before the introduction of Namo Bharat and other modern trains. The plan, similar to Vande Bharat, is aimed at making railway stations more modern. Nearly ₹3 lakh crores are being spent on this ambitious project proposed by the Central Government. Prime Minister Narendra Modi believes that with Namo Bharat, Vande Bharat, and Amrit Bharat railway station plans, Indian Railways will reach new heights of modernization by the end of this decade.
