Upcoming 2027 Cricket World Cup

In 2027, the Cricket World Cup will be jointly hosted by South Africa and Zimbabwe for the second time, with Namibia making its debut as the host nation. The tournament, scheduled for October and November 2027, will feature 14 teams, following a similar format to the 2003 edition.

The 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup is the 14th edition of this quadrennial One Day International (ODI) cricket tournament. Organized by the International Cricket Council (ICC), the event will take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

Qualification for the 2027 Cricket World Cup involves South Africa and Zimbabwe securing their spots as co-hosts automatically. Additionally, the top eight teams in the ICC One Day Rankings will qualify directly, while the remaining four spots will be determined through a global qualifier tournament. Namibia, despite co-hosting the tournament for the first time, must follow the standard qualification process since they are not full ICC members.

How do teams qualify for the 2027 Cricket World Cup?

It’s a bit complicated, so let’s break it down.

South Africa and Zimbabwe automatically qualify as hosts, but Namibia doesn’t.

The top eight teams in the ICC Men’s ODI rankings will join, leaving four spots for teams to qualify through the 2026 Cricket World Cup Qualifier.

Ten teams will participate in this qualifier – the top eight and the next two highest-ranked teams after the hosts. Additionally, the top two teams from each group in Cricket World Cup League 2 and the top two teams from each group in the Challenge League will also qualify.

League 2 consists of Canada, Namibia, Nepal, Netherlands, Oman, Scotland, United Arab Emirates, and the United States.

The Challenge League includes Jersey, Papua New Guinea, Denmark, Hong Kong, Kenya, Qatar, Singapore, and Uganda.

The top four teams from the qualifier will then earn a place in the main tournament.

The 2027 Cricket World Cup will be jointly hosted by South Africa and Zimbabwe for the second time, with Namibia making its debut as the host nation. The previous occasion was in the 2003 edition.

Format of the 2027 Cricket World Cup

The competition will consist of two groups, each comprising seven teams. The top three teams from each group will advance to the Super Six stage, followed by semifinals and a final to determine the ultimate winner. In the group stage, each team will face all others in its group once, reminiscent of the format used in the 2003 edition. Notably, the 2027 edition will reintroduce the Points Carry Forward (PCF) system, a modified version of the system used in the 1999 edition.
